Oba Market — Monday
On Mondays the Oba neighbourhood market sets up: fruit and vegetable stalls side by side with sellers of clothes and souvenirs. It is an easy way to see everyday Alanya outside the hotel. At the fruit stalls you also know what to look for: bananas, avocados and carob, all three registered with a geographical indication under the name Alanya.
In Alanya the neighbourhood market moves from district to district through the week. On the municipality's list of thirteen market sites, Monday is marked against Oba, and in summer 2025 the market was still setting up on the same day, with textiles and souvenirs alongside the fruit and vegetables. This is not a tourist bazaar but the neighbourhood's weekly shop.
When you look over the fruit stalls, it helps to know what the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office has on record. Alanya avocados received a designation of origin in 2018 and Alanya bananas in 2022. Carob is the newest on the list, registered with a geographical indication in 2025. A designation of origin means the product owes its character directly to that soil and climate; a geographical indication means the product is identified with that place.
So a fruit on the stall carrying the name Alanya is not just a place name but a registered quality. Which fruit is on the stalls depends on the season; the market itself is there every Monday.
Our city tour shows Alanya's past through the castle, Kızılkule and the shipyard, while the market shows the same town today. We do not run a tour to the market, so the easiest plan is to put the two in the same week on different days.
